"Brooklyn's verandas were built for slow mornings and long lunches — the blind should disappear into that, not fight it."
The collection
Twelve products. One Brooklyn veranda.
From the street-facing bay window to the gable above the stairs — one coherent specification for the whole house, chosen room by room.
Roller blinds
Blockout, sunscreen and double-roller day/night combinations — made to the exact opening.
Sun, heat and blackout control in one motorised system, rolling into a slim head box.
Shading, not security. Our roller shutters are made for sun, heat and glare control on the outside of the glass. They are not security-rated shutters — that is a different product, which we can quote on request.
Snapped cords and chains, a tilt mechanism that has stopped turning, brackets worked loose by a repaint, a blind taken down during a move and never rehung. We restring, re-bracket and replace parts wherever the mechanism allows — and if a repair isn't worth your money, we'll say so plainly and quote the replacement instead.
Before you spend a rand: how the Pretoria sun crosses these jacaranda avenues by season, what it does to each elevation of an old veranda house, and exactly what we'd fit where — with the honest trade-off on each option, and real sources at the foot.
A blockout roller in deep navy holds a Brooklyn bedroom properly dark through a five-o'clock Highveld sunrise — cut to an original opening that stopped being properly square a long time ago.
East of the CBD and shaded by some of Pretoria's oldest jacaranda avenues, Brooklyn is a suburb of Edwardian and mid-century homes — many of them sympathetically converted into the small cafés and restaurants along its side streets, a short walk from the University of Pretoria and the embassy belt beyond Muckleneuk. That mix of old timber, street-level foot traffic and long dining hours changes what "the right blind" means here.
Veranda windows were never built to a catalogue size
A century of settling leaves original sash and casement openings slightly out of square. A tape measure on site beats a standard size every time — it's the whole reason the free measure exists.
Jacaranda season is six weeks. The sun underneath it isn't
The famous lilac canopy softens October and November, but the same north- and west-facing rooms take full Highveld sun the other eleven months. A proper sunscreen mesh or blockout fabric does the real work.
A street full of converted verandas means eyes at eye level
Ground-floor rooms near the café strip see students, embassy staff and weekend brunch crowds pass at window height all day. Day-night and cellular options hold privacy without boxing up the original opening.
Highveld storms build fast over a Brooklyn afternoon
A terrace awning caught open in a sudden thunderstorm gust doesn't survive it. Motorised, wind-sensored operation protects the investment — not an upsell, just the responsible spec.
The terrace
Shade that knows when to fold away.
A terracotta-toned folding-arm awning turns a Brooklyn veranda back into a long-lunch table — out in the heat of the day, gone the moment its wind sensor feels a Highveld storm building.
No showroom trip, no guessing at sizes from a brochure — the measure happens at the actual window.

Tell us about your windows
A short form: rooms, roughly how many windows, and what's actually bothering you — glare, privacy from the street, heat, or a draughty old sash.
02
Free in-home measure
A consultant visits with samples, measures every opening precisely, and talks through fabric, openness and motorisation for that room's real light.
03
Written quote, per window
Itemised and honest, with lead times confirmed upfront. No pressure to decide before you've sat with the samples.
04
Made to order & fitted
Manufactured to the exact opening and installed cleanly by our own team, with a full operation demo before we leave.
The detail
Made to measure, to the millimetre.
Timber slats tilted to the hour, throwing the light in stripes across a navy wall. Grain, slat width and ladder-tape colour are all things a free measure lets you hold against your own veranda light before you commit to a window.
Our home is one of Brooklyn's older character properties — will new blinds damage the original frames?+
Usually not. We favour inside-mount brackets sized to the actual recess, or a light outside-mount fixed to the surrounding wall rather than the sash itself where the timber is fragile. The free measure tells us which suits your specific frame before anything is ordered.
What actually cuts the glare on a north-facing veranda room?+
A 3–5% openness sunscreen mesh keeps the garden or street view while cutting glare and UV — the standard answer once jacaranda season passes. For bedrooms that need real darkness, a blockout roller or blockout cellular blind does the rest.
We're close to the café strip with a lot of foot traffic — how do we get privacy without losing light?+
Day-night blinds and cellular blinds both hold privacy from eye-level passers-by while still letting daylight through, which suits a street-facing living or dining room better than a full blockout roller.
Will a terrace awning actually survive a proper Highveld thunderstorm?+
Wind ratings are real limits, not marketing. Specify the awning with a motor and wind sensor and it retracts itself before a gust can catch it open — that's the difference between an awning that lasts and one that doesn't.
Are the blinds safe with young children or grandchildren in the house?+
Chain and cord tensioners are fitted as standard on every corded blind, and we'll steer nurseries and kids' rooms toward wand, cordless or motorised options with nothing left dangling within reach.
What does the quote actually cost?+
Nothing. The in-home measure, the sample viewing and the written per-window quote are all free, with no obligation to proceed.
